In a shocking decision, the Senate chose to block President Obama's pick for the head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. This was the first time in Obama's presidency that one of his nominees failed to get a majority. Much of the opposition centered on Adegblie's role in at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, where he served as a lawyer in the murder case against Mumia Jamal. Obama saw this denial as an unfair character attack against Adegbile. So basically, he was defeated based on who he represented.
This article is perfect for showing how the Senate functions, as well as showing how it uses its distinct powers. It demonstrates how the Senate has the power to deny the President's nominees. Also, the Senate is also mainly democratic, which is another reason that this denial was surprising. One would think that the democrats would be willing to accept another democrat. Overall, I don't have much of an opinion on this- I would need to do further research to fully understand what happened.
