As of April 2014, the European Union will begin to deny housing benefits for jobless migrants. Government officials believe that this will prevent people from abusing the UK welfare system. They believe that there are far too many immigrants coming to UK looking for a free handout, and the British government is tired of being exploited. With this action, the government believes that it is protecting it's citizens, and ensuring that they get their rewards for their hard work. Though no firm plans have been made, most people seem to agree that the benefits should be based on the "contributory principle".
This article directly relates back to one of the main purposes of government, providing public goods. Public goods are the services and benefits that are available to all citizens, and housing benefits for the unemployed is definitely in that category. I do agree with those who believe that it should be based on the "contributory principle", which simply means those who worked hard and did their part deserve this benefit. However, I also believe that anyone who is truly trying to find work and improve their lives deserves a helping hand. Perhaps a time limit on these benefits is called for, or maybe some form of filter for those applying. It's a tough situation, because there obviously will be those people trying to work the system and getting something for nothing.
